PRINCETON - Carly Grabowski completed her second straight perfect regular season and teammate Christina Fast pulled out another win at No. 9, but it wasn't enough to lead the Princeton women's squash team to a victory at second-ranked Trinity Sunday afternoon. To earn another shot at the Bantams, Princeton would need to claim a spot in next weekend's Howe Cup championships.
Trinity swept each of the top seven matches, including five 3-0 wins in the top five spots. Princeton had a couple of tight third games, but Trinity's experience prevailed in each match.
Both No. 6 Marilla Hiltz and No. 7 Margaret Kent extended their matches to a fourth game, but neither could pull out victories. Fast also went four games, but she bounced back from a 9-2 loss in the third game to clinch the match with a 9-5 win in the fourth.
Grabowski had one of the wilder matches of the day. After splitting the first two games against Siobhan Knight, Grabowski dominated the third game for a 9-0 win. Knight bounced right back for a 9-3 win in the fourth, but Grabowski didn't miss a beat in the finale, claiming a 9-1 win.
"I think Carly was a little nervous in her first game," head coach Gail Ramsay said afterwards. "She came back very strong, especially in that third game. She might have lost a bit of focus in the fourth, but she won a strong and decisive fifth game. Christina also played very well. She's probably one of the toughest No. 9 players anywhere in the country." Ramsay will be able to judge that statement next weekend at Harvard, where the Howe Cup will be awarded to the national team champion. Princeton will likely enter as the No. 4 seed and should have a quarterfinal showdown with Penn, which it defeated 6-3 in Philadelphia earlier this season.
"We're going to have to play very well next weekend," Ramsay said. "Fortunately, I think we'll go into it pretty healthy. I thought today was a good showing overall, although the results weren't great. We showed toughness and more confidence today."
