CLERMONT, Fla. - Princeton freshman Michael Maag finished in sixth place overall on Saturday to help the United States junior team win the second annual NACAC Cross Country Championship event held at the U.S. National Training Event outside Orlando.
Maag, a Lake Oswego, Ore., native, ran the six-kilometer course in 19:52.41. He was one of only six runners out of 28 in the field to complete the hilly course in fewer than 20 minutes. Maag was the third United States finisher in the event.
"Michael ran very well," said Princeton assistant coach Steve Dolan, who was at the event. "It was a very difficult course and he did well against very good competition."
The Junior Men's 6K race featured teams from the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. The U.S. team placed five runners in the top 10 overall to win the race over second-place Canada.
The North American, Central American & Caribbean (NACAC) Cross Country Championships are in their second year in 2006. There were three races Saturday in addition to the junior men's 6K race; a junior women's 4K race, a senior women's 6K race and a senior men's 8K race.
Maag qualified for the NACAC championship by finishing in 10th place in the junior event at the USATF Cross Country championships held at New York City's Van Cortlandt Park in February.
