CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Princeton can now chalk up a second history-making performance on the Charles River. Months after becoming the first collegiate crew to win the Head of the Charles since 1983, Princeton won the Compton Cup in Cambridge Saturday for the first time since 1957.
Princeton entered the 2005 showdown for the Compton Cup as the team to beat, but Harvard left with that distinction. The Crimson wouldn't ever lose it, claiming its third straight Eastern and national title to end the year. Princeton hopes Saturday's win propels it to the same honors. The No. 1 Tigers claimed the first varsity race in 6:00.9, topping No. 4 Harvard (6:04.25) and MIT (6:47.1).
Princeton also claimed a victory in the first novice race, winning in 6:23.6, while Harvard placed second in 6:26.4. The Crimson claimed wins in second varsity (6:23.25/6:33.1) and third varsity/second freshman.
This is Princeton's first Compton Cup since 2001 and 14th overall. The Tigers are now 5-0 overall and will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., next weekend to compete for the Carnegie Cup against Cornell and Yale.
