VERNON, N.J. - Whether it was by one shot or a wide margin, a win is a win and the Princeton men's golf team claimed its third straight league title Sunday at the Ivy League Championships held at Ballyowen Golf Club. At +31, Princeton held off Columbia by one shot to win its 19th conference crown since the tournament began in 1975.
After the first round Saturday, Columbia led by two shots, but the Tigers made up the difference and took a four-shot lead into Sunday's single round. Princeton gave three shots back over the day and won 895 strokes to 896.
Brown (+53), Penn (+54), Yale (+65), Dartmouth (+76), Harvard (+76) and Cornell (+96) rounded out the field.
Individually, Brown's Larry Haertel was the only player in red numbers, finishing at -4 on the par-72 course. Chris Condello and D.J. Hynes tied for second at +1, while Princeton's top player, Jason Gerken, finished fourth at +6 (78-72-72-222). Andrew Maliniak tied for sixth at +8 (76-75-73-224) while Jesse Dixon (78-75-73-226) and John Sawin (74-78-74-226) tied for ninth at +10. Brent Herlihy (75-78-76-229) tied for 12th at +13.
Haertel and Hynes were the only players to have a sub-70 round during the weekend as Haertel took control of the tournament with his 68 on Sunday and Hynes posted a 69 Sunday as well. Princeton's low round was a 72 by Gerken in rounds two and three.
Princeton competes next in the Cavalier Classic hosted by the University of Virginia next Saturday and Sunday.
