PHILADELPHIA - The Princeton women's 4X800 relay team of Catha Mullen, Lindsay Cole, Liz Bergold and Jordan Wagenseller earned a prestigious honor Saturday afternoon when they won the College Women's 4X800 race at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
Running in Heat 1 of 2 on the day, the Princeton foursome edged out Western Michigan by a second-and-a-half to take the victory. Princeton ran the eight laps in a time of 8:54.92, while Western Michigan finished in 8:56.21.
No team in Heat 2 ran faster than nine minutes for the eight laps.
On the men's side, it was another impressive day for Alex Pessala in the college men's hammer throw in the afternoon. Pessala's heave of 59.88 meters (196 feet, 5 inches) was good for second place in the event behind Radford's Jeremiah Spence, who threw the hammer 199 feet, 2 inches.
Only slightly outdone by their women's counterparts, the Tiger men's 4X800 relay team also had a strong performance on Saturday. That team, featuring Kurt Kuehne, Mike Kowal, Collin Plummer and Bryan Sharkey, was third in the College Men's Race, finishing the eight laps in 7:33.81. The Tigers were just inches behind second-place Dartmouth (.12 seconds), while Coppin State won the race.
Princeton also ran in the impressive Championship of America field in the 4Xmile race, finishing in 11th place ahead of Navy. In the pole vault, Andrew Park competed in the championship flight as well, but was unable to clear a height as only two vaulters could clear the bar in extremely windy conditions in Philadelphia.
