PRINCETON - Thirteen was hardly an unlucky number for the Princeton men's heavyweight crew. The nation's top-ranked team claimed the Childs Cup, collegiate crew's most historic trophy, for a 13th straight time by defeating Penn and Columbia on Lake Carnegie Saturday. The Tigers will now turn their focus on a new streak, the 25 straight dual wins posted by the Harvard Crimson.
The Childs Cup, which was first competed for in 1879, went to Princeton (6:21.5) by 21 seconds over Penn. Miserable weather bright challenging conditions, including a stiff, direct headwind and choppy waters. Nonetheless, Princeton cruised to victory over its two Ivy rivals in the first varsity race to run its record to 3-0.
Princeton also claimed a win in the second varsity (6:46.5) by more than 23 seconds over Columbia. Penn won the novice eight by 4.9 seconds over Princeton.
The Tigers will now turn their attention to defending IRA and Eastern Sprint champion Harvard. Princeton was the silver medalist in both races last season, but it couldn't solve the Crimson at any point last season. In fact, no team has defeated Harvard since April of 2001, when Princeton did so at home. Harvard will look to extend its 25-meet streak next weekend on Lake Charles and claim the Compton Cup, while Princeton will look to secure its spot as the team to beat from the East with a win.
