GREENSBORO, N.C. - Running after 10:00 p.m. after an hour-long rain delay, Princeton's Frank Macreery finished in seventh place in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Regional at Irwin Belk Track Friday night.
Macreery, who ran the 12 1/2 laps in 14:12.54, and 11th-place Michael Maag, who finished the race in 14:28.67, will be placed in a national pool from which four to eight athletes will be chosen for the NCAA championship in Sacramento June 7-10. The top five athletes in Friday's race qualified automatically.
Princeton also had five other competitors on Friday in the East regional meet, including two in the hammer throw. Both Alex Pessala and Ken Stringer each finished fifth in their flight in that event, with Pessala finishing 15th overall and Stringer 24th.
In the pole vault on Friday, junior Andrew Park cleared the initial height of 4.91 meters (16 feet, 1 1/4 inch) but missed on three attempts at 5.06 meters (16 feet, 7 1/4 inches).
Two other Tigers competed in the 5,000 meters along with Macreery and Maag. David Nightingale finished 13th, while Frank Tinney placed 19th in the field.
The Tigers will have one competitor on Saturday at the East regional, with Josh Probst taking part in the javelin competition.
