Matheson's W-League Squad Takes Second at League Finals

Diana Matheson, who will begin her junior year at Princeton in the fall, helped her Ottawa Fury team to a second-place finish at the W-League championship in Vancouver, British Columbia, Aug. 4-6.

Matheson played all 90 minutes in a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Lady Eagles on Aug. 4 and logged another complete game Aug. 6 against the Vancouver Whitecaps. On the help of two goals from her fellow Canadian national team member, Christine Sinclair, Vancouver defeated Ottawa 3-0.

Ottawa finished the season 14-2-1 in the 38-team W-League. Splitting time between the Fury and Team Canada, the starting midfielder played in six of Ottawa's regular season games and all five postseason contests.

Incoming freshman midfielder Lauren Thomas, pictured at right, also won on a big stage recently. In a national U-18 tournament run by U.S. Youth Soccer, her Dallas Texans 88 Red defeated a local team, the PDA New Jersey Wildcats, 3-1 to win the USYS U-18 national title on July 30 in Des Moines, Iowa. Thomas' team fell behind 1-0 early in the chase for the Francis J. "Frank" Kelly Cup, but scored three goals in the last 13 minutes to win the title.

Princeton begins its season at home Sept. 2 against Boston University.
