Women's Soccer Visits William & Mary in Final Pre-Conference Weekend
September 14, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Coming off two wins at the Penn Invitational, the Princeton women's soccer team heads to Virginia to face a pair of fellow MId-Atlantic Region teams in Virginia Commonwealth Friday at 4 p.m. and William & Mary Sunday at noon.
The Orange and Black defeated Richmond last Friday in Philadelphia, 2-0, with both goals coming from junior midfielder and 2004 All-America Diana Matheson. Two days later, Matheson had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over Hofstra as the Tigers broke open the game late.
Shutting the door
Junior goalkeeper Maren Dale enjoyed 180 minutes of shutout soccer against Richmond and Hofstra. It's the second time in her career she has posted back-to-back shutouts after pulling the feat against Dartmouth and La Salle last season.
Thanks for the accolades
For her three goals and two assists over the weekend, Diana Matheson became the Ivy League's first Player of the Week of 2006. She was also named to SoccerBuzz.com's Elite Team of the Week, which chooses 18 players from the more than 300 Division I programs.
Rankings, rankings
Princeton is ranked...... William & Mary is No. 18 nationally by the NSCAA and No. 3 in the Mid-Atlantic Region. SoccerBuzz.com has the Tribe at No. 6 in the Mid-Atlantic, just ahead of Princeton at No. 7 and VCU at No. 9.
A presidential feel

More Tribe ties
Head coach Julie Shackford was a three-time All-America for William & Mary and is a 1988 graduate.
A tough place to play
Princeton has tangled with the Tribe on their home field twice and came home empty-handed both times. In 1992, Princeton lost 5-0. Ten years later, the Tigers fell in overtime, 1-0. Princeton is 1-3 all-time in the series, winning 2-1 in overtime in 2001 after losing 6-1 in 1991.
On neutral ground
Princeton and VCU will meet for the second time on someone else's field. In the series' only other meeting in 1997, the Tigers won 4-0 as part of a tournament hosted by the University of Virginia.
More Virginia
Two other Princeton players have Virginia ties. Assistant coach Scott Champ is a 1992 alumnus of the University of Virginia and senior captain Christina Costantino is a native of the Washington, D.C. suburb of Burke, Va.
Farrell times two
Senior Meghan Farrell scored a pair of goals in the last 10 minutes against Hofstra. They were the sixth and seventh goals of her career and first since the 2004 meeting with Dartmouth.
First of many
Freshman Marci Pasenello scored her first goal against Hofstra, a score that put Princeton ahead 4-0. She is one of two freshmen to score points on the young season after Vicki Anagnostopoulos notched an assist against Richmond.
On the Rams
Virginia Commonwealth enters the weekend at 3-2-1 with wins over Richmond, Stetson and La Salle. Native New Zealander and junior midfielder Hayley Moorwood has three of VCU's seven goal. Junior Lauren Hardison has logged every minute in goal, accruing a 1.12 goals-against average.
On the Tribe
William & Mary has won five of its six games so far this year with the only loss coming to No. 16 Auburn, 2-1 in overtime. In wins over UNC Greensboro, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, La Salle and Colgate, the Tribe have allowed a total of two goals. Sophomore Claire Zimmeck is the team's leading scorer with three of the team's 12 goals. Sophomore Meghan Walker has been the goalkeeper in all six games with a GAA of 0.65.
Hey, I know you
Sunday's game will feature a pair of senior defenders from Lake Braddock High in Burke, Va., in Princeton's Christina Costantino and William & Mary's Lauren Bowers.
