Women's Soccer Returns to Ivy Schedule with Dartmouth Saturday
September 28, 2006 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. -- The Tigers will look to even their Ivy record against Dartmouth Saturday in the opening game of a doubleheader with the men's team to follow, also against the Big Green. Last weekend, both Princeton teams fell at Yale to open their Ivy slates.
Pretty even
Princeton and Dartmouth have 12 wins apiece in the all-time series with a tie thrown in for good measure. However, the Tigers have won six of the last seven since 1999 with the only loss coming by a goal in 2003 in Hanover. Princeton has won three in a row at home. The Orange and Black's recent positive streak against the Big Green came after Dartmouth won every game from 1991-98.
Some context
Dartmouth earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament last season despite being tied for second with the Tigers at 15 points in the Ivy standings. Princeton missed out on the postseason for the first time since 1998.
Growing up green
Sophomore Sarah Peteraf has strong ties to Dartmouth College as both of her parents work at the school.
Rookie impact
All six members of the Princeton soccer Class of 2010 have seen game action, with Caitlin Alev as one of six Tigers overall to have started all eight games. Vicki Anagnostopoulos is one of four Tigers with multiple goals while leading the team with 21 shots. Marci Pasenello has played in all eight games while Melissa Seitz has six starts and Lauren Thomas has five. Goalkeeper Jesse George-Nichol made her collegiate debut in the closing minutes of the Lehigh game Sept. 19.
Shutting 'em out
Princeton's four shutouts so far this year are one more than the team had all of last year. During the 2004 run to the College Cup final four, the team recorded 12 blankings.
Between the pipes
Junior goalkeeper Maren Dale has cemented herself as the starting goalkeeper with some strong performances this season. She has three shutouts and earned most of a fourth before giving way to George-Nichol against Lehigh. She has allowed no more than two goals in any game this season, resulting in her GAA of 0.86.
O Canada
Diana Matheson wasn't on the field during Princeton's 2-1 win over Loyola Wednesday as she was training with her Canadian national team. She'll be with the Tigers the rest of the season, good news to a team that is 1-2 without her. Until Princeton came through with two second-half goals against Loyola, the team hadn't scored this season when Matheson wasn't playing.
Lucky number seven?
Princeton has won six in a row at Lourie-Love Field dating back to last season. During Julie Shackford's 11-plus seasons as head coach, Princeton is 76-18-4 at home.
On the Big Green
Dartmouth enters the weekend at 5-3-1 overall. All three losses have come by a single goal each against major-conference teams including Minnesota, Auburn and Vanderbilt. The Big Green hasn't allowed a goal in 405:03, going 3-0-1 since allowing one goal to the Golden Gophers Sept. 15. The team has allowed only six goals all season while scoring 14 of its own and has outshot its opponents 157-56. Junior forward Monica Martin leads the team with three goals, but five other players have scored a pair. Junior Amanda Webb has spent all but 65 minutes in goal, earning a 0.70 GAA.
Staying local
Princeton won't leave the state again until Oct. 14. Three of the next four are at home against Dartmouth, Brown and Bucknell, while the lone road game during the stretch is just up Route 1 at Rutgers.
TV time
Next Wednesday's game at Rutgers will be an 8 p.m. local start due to television. The Tigers and Scarlet Knights will appear on Fox Soccer Channel, available on satellite and digital cable outlets.
