Princeton Women Win Paul Short Run
September 29, 2006 | Women's Cross Country
The Princeton women's cross country team won its third meet in as many tries this season Friday afternoon, and this one was a big one.
Senior Mia Swenson led the No. 13-ranked Tigers with a fourth-place finish, and three other Tigers placed in the top 15, as Princeton edged Wisconsin to take the 33rd annual Paul Short Run at Lehigh's Goodman Campus.
Princeton's score of 61 edged the Badgers, also nationally-ranked, by just one point. Another nationally-ranked team, Tennessee, was well behind in third place in the 35-team, 237-runner meet.
Swenson finished the six-kilometer course in a time of 20:39, one of eight runners to finish in less than 21 minutes. Freshmen Liz Costello and Christy Johnson again made big contributions for the winning Tigers, finishing ninth (21:01) and 11th (21:10) respectively.
Junior Caitlin McTague finished 15th overall in 21:18, while another freshman, Reilly Kiernan, was Princeton's final scorer in 22nd place.
Villanova's Frances Koons won the individual race in a time of 20:16. The Tigers finished well ahead of Ivy League foes Yale (5th) and Penn (6th) at the meet.
Princeton also won the season-opening Princeton Invitational Sept. 9 as well as the annual H/Y/P meet at Boston's Franklin Park last weekend.
