Field Hockey Visits Yale, Hosts William & Mary This Weekend
September 08, 2006 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- The Princeton field hockey team travels to Yale on Saturday, then faces William & Mary at home on Sunday, as the Tigers look to climb into the win column following a pair of one-goal losses in its first two games of the season.
Princeton dropped its season opener last Saturday at No. 19 Richmond 4-3, and then fell at No. 7 Penn State 3-2 on Wednesday. The schedule does not get any easier for Princeton as Saturday's game marks the beginning of the Ivy League season and Sunday brings another ranked competitor up against the Tigers.
In the game at Richmond, Princeton jumped ahead only to have Richmond rally and win with a late goal. At Penn State, it was Princeton that erased a two-goal deficit, but the Nittany Lions got the deciding goal late and held on for the win.
Sophomore Leah Hoagland, who scored once last season, finds herself atop the Tiger leaderboard with two goals and an assist. She has scored in each game and assisted on an additional goal at Penn State. Freshman Tina Bortz also has two goals this season. Both came at Richmond and propelled her to Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors on Monday.
Princeton begins its quest for a second straight league title and its 12th title in 13 seasons when it visits Yale on Saturday afternoon. Last season the Tigers downed the Bulldogs 5-1 on the strength of three goals from then senior Lauren Ehrlichman and two from current junior Sarah Yuki. Juniors Nicole Ng and Paige Schmidt and sophomore Sarah Reinprecht assisted on goals in the game and senior goalkeeper Juliana Simon earned the win. Princeton 30-2-3 all-time against Yale and has won 21 straight meetings between the two schools.
Yale is 1-1 on the season. The Bulldogs opened with a 3-1 win against Virginia Commonwealth, but lost on Wednesday at No. 9 Connecticut 6-0. Harriet Thayer's three points leads the team in scoring.
Princeton returns to action on Sunday for its first home game of the season. The game will be the first of 11 regular-season home contests for the Tigers. William & Mary will be Princeton's third ranked opponent this season as the Tribe currently hold the No. 17 spot in the polls. Princeton will meet nine teams either currently ranked or receiving votes in the most recent STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll. Princeton was in the receiving votes category in this week's poll for the second time this season.
William & Mary brings a 4-0 record into this weekends games. The Tribe does face Rutgers on Friday night before its game on Sunday at Class of '52 Stadium. William & Mary has wins this season against Ball State, Miami, Davidson and Radford. Gina Cimarelli leads Richmond with five goals and 11 points.
Sunday's game is the first of three straight home games for the Tigers. Princeton hosts Dartmouth in Ivy action next Saturday and then hosts third-ranked Old Dominion the following weekend.
