Womens' Hockey Falls 5-3 at Rensselaer

TROY, N.Y. -- The 10th-ranked Princeton women's hockey team rallied from second-period deficits of 2-0 and 3-2, but could not could not overcome an Engineer goal with three minutes remaining as RPI tripped up the Tigers 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at Houston Fieldhouse. Sophomore Annie Greenwood and senior Kate Hession had two points in the game.
Following a scoreless first period, RPI jumped on the Tigers early in the second period, scoring twice in the period's first 3:21 with two goals less than two minutes apart. Whitney Naslund opened the scoring at 1:26 and Sarah Daniel gave her team a 2-0 lead 1:55 later.
But the Tigers used two quick goals to rally back and make the score 2-2 midway through the period. Freshman Melanie Wallace put Princeton on the board at 10:38 with her fifth goal of the season. The goal came on the power play and was set up by Hession and sophomore Katherine Dineen. Greenwood made the score 2-2 1:33 later when she notched her fifth goal of the season with assists going to juniors Brittany Salmon and Lizzie Keady.
The score stayed even for three minutes before Rensselaer jumped back on top 3-2 on Allison Wright's rebound goal with 3:07 left in the period. Rensselaer took that lead into the intermission.
The Tigers drew even for the second time in the game early in the period when junior Marykate Oakley's 11th goal of the season came at 3:21 of the period from Hession and Greenwood.
The score remained tied until Rensselaer scored the game-winning goal with the teams skating four aside with 3:04 remaining. Julie Aho banged home the rebound of a Melanie Guillemette shot for the deciding goal. Allison Wright added an empty-net goal to reach the 5-3 final with 45 seconds remaining.
Princeton fell to 11-9-2 overall and 9-5-1 in the ECACHL with the loss while Rensselaer is now 9-12-1 overall and 5-5-1 in league play. Princeton resumes action tomorrow afternoon at Union.
