Comeback Falls Short as Cornell Defeats Women's Hoops, 70-66; Cowher Scores Career-High 35
January 13, 2007 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Comeback Kids couldn't quite come back on Saturday night against Cornell. Despite 35 points from Meagan Cowher, the Princeton women's basketball team fell 70-66 at Jadwin Gym, dropping the Tigers' Ivy record to 2-1.
“You've got to be ready every night in this league and we weren't,” Princeton head coach Richard Barron said.
Cowher's total is a career-high and the most points scored by any Princeton player since Sandi Bittler also scored 35 against Rider in 1989. The program record for points in a game is 38 by Ellen DeVoe in 1985.
“She responded well and as the game moved along she continued to perform,” Barron said of Princeton's leading scorer, who now averages 19 points per game.
Cowher, a junior, upped her career total to 966 as she seeks to become Princeton's 17th 1,000-point scorer.
Four Cornell players were in double-figures, led by Claire Perry with 20. Cornell's Moina Snyder had a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. No other Tiger reached 10 points as Caitlin O'Neill was the next closest with eight.
Princeton had the lead, 66-65, on a layup by Casey Lockwood with 48 seconds left, but Snyder countered with two free throws with 44 seconds left to give Cornell the lead for good. On Princeton's ensuing possession, Cowher was looking for Lockwood on a pass but missed, sending the pass into the backcourt for a turnover.
With the clock down to 27 seconds after the turnover, the Tigers had to foul and Perry, the Ivy League's leading free-throw shooter, hit both to put Cornell up by three, 69-66, with 25 seconds left. O'Neill took a long three-pointer and missed, and Cornell's Jeomi Maduka hit one of two following a foul to clinch the game.
Princeton had come back from double-digit deficits twice in recent games, winning after being down 14 at Duquesne on Dec. 22 and just last night against Columbia after being down 13, but Princeton couldn't quite close the gap Saturday night.
The Tigers shot 37.5 percent for the game to 51.1 percent for Cornell. Princeton had been a strong shooting team of late with four straight games of better than 40 percent from the field, but it was the team's third-coolest night in the season's 17 games. It was also just the third time all year Princeton had allowed its opponent to shoot better than 50 percent.
Princeton won the rebounding battle handily, 41-30, but the shooting percentage deficit was enough for Cornell to win the close game. It was the seventh time this season Princeton had outrebounded its opponent, but the first such game to end in a loss.
Princeton led 6-3 less than three minutes into the game, but Cornell scored five straight points and held the lead until Cowher capped a 7-0 run with a bucket with 8:46 to play in the half to give Princeton the lead, 21-20. Cornell, however, scored nine of the half's last 11 points to lead 33-27 at the break.
Cornell's lead only got as low as three early in the first half before ballooning to as much as 13 at 52-39 with 12:30 to play.
Down 56-50 with 7:52 left, Princeton benefited from Cowher scoring five straight points to narrow the gap to one. With just inside four minutes left, O'Neill hit a three-pointer to give Princeton a 61-60 lead.
But the Tigers went quiet for nearly two critical minutes with an missed three and a turnover before Ali Prichard tied the game at 64-64 with 1:59 left. Two possessions later came Lockwood's bucket to give Princeton the lead for the final time at 66-65.
The Tigers will be away from competition until Feb. 2 due to finals. That night, Yale will visit Jadwin Gym before Brown comes in Feb. 3 for a pair of 7 p.m. tipoffs.
