January 06, 2007 | General, Men's Track and Field
In a tense competition that came down to the final event, Princeton's 4X800 team defeated Navy's by more than two seconds to give the Tigers a 91-90 win over the Midshipmen in a dual meet in Annapolis Saturday.
The Tigers trailed by one point heading into that final event but completed the 3200 meters in 7:58.90 for five points, with Navy finishing in 8:01.20 for three points.
Individually, on the track, Princeton won three events and was strong in several others. Senior Brian Shields was extremely fast in 22.5 seconds to win the 200 meters, while classmate Rich Stewart took the 500 meters in 1:04.5. Princeton also won the 55-meter hurdles when Chris Vasich finished in a time of 7.7 seconds.
In the field events, Princeton won the high jump and pole vault and took the top three places in the weight throw, helping the Tigers get into position to win the meet in the final events. Justin Frick's leap of 2.09 meters won the high jump, while Andrew Park was an easy winner in the pole vault with a mark of 4.90 meters. Alex Pessala then won the weight with an impressive toss of 18.63 meters, and Matt McNamara and Eric Plummer were right behind, giving Princeton eight points in the event.
Duane Hynes was second in the 55 hurdles, giving the Tigers the top two spots in that race, while Andrew Usuro was second behind Shields in the 200 in a time of 22.8 seconds.
