Columbia head coach: Kevin McCarthy (14th season/Columbia '85)
The Princeton-Columbia series
Princeton won seven straight over Columbia before the Lions took a 3-2 win last year in Manhattan on the way to the Ivy League title. The Tigers still have a 16-4-2 all-time advantage in the series.
Last time against Columbia
Columbia scored its first win over the Tigers since 1998 last year on its home field. The Lions' Sophie Reiser and Princeton's Diana Matheson traded goals, with Matheson's coming on a penalty kick, to send the game into the half tied 1-1. Shannon Munoz and Jenny Brandt scored within the first 12 minutes of the second half to put Columbia ahead 3-1. Taylor Numann, a defender, then had what is her only career goal to this point to pull Princeton within 3-2 with eight minutes to play, but the Lions held on.
I'm honored
Diana Matheson earned Princeton's first Ivy League Player of the Week honor of the season with nine points in last week's wins over Rutgers and Brown. She became the first Tiger soccer player, male or female, to have four assists in a game with her effort against the Scarlet Knights. In the process, she moved into first place on the women's career list, now with 24, and is just three helpers from matching the men's record of 27. Saturday at Brown, Matheson added two goals and an assist.
20/20 vision
With the first of her four assists against Rutgers, Diana Matheson became the first Princeton soccer player, male or female, to have 20 goals and 20 assists in a career. She now has 22 goals and 24 assists.
She's Om-azing
Junior Jen Om scored her fourth goal of the season against Rutgers last week. She leads the team in that category and has scored all four of those goals in the last month. Om came into the season with one goal through her first two years.
Spreading the wealth
With Diana Matheson, Regina Yang and Allison Williams joining the list against Brown, 10 Tigers have scored goals this season. Adding Marissa Sampias' two assists, 11 Tigers have points this year.
Goals aplenty
Princeton has scored 16 goals in its last five games. That is the most in a five-game span since 2004, when the Tigers found the back of the net 21 times in a five-game span that included seven-goal outings against American and Cornell.
More goals
Princeton's 19 goals through its first 10 games are also the most since 2004, when the Tigers had 22 goals at this point in the season.
Shuffling the order
Sixteen Tigers have earned starts as the team has fielded seven distinct starting lineups. The same 11 took the field against Rutgers and Brown, and all 18 available field players entered the game against the Bears last Saturday.
Steady keeper
Princeton goalkeeper Maren Dale has started the Tigers' last 26 games and has a goals-against average of 1.06 in that span.
Still going
Junior defender Taylor Numann, a first-team All-Ivy honoree in 2006, has started every game of her career, a streak 42 contests long. Numann and freshmen Alexandra Valerio and Marissa Sampias are the only Tigers to have started every possible game during their Princeton careers.
More starting
Diana Matheson has had to miss some games in her Princeton career to compete and train with the Canadian national team but the senior has started all 50 games in which she has played.
Every minute
Melissa Whitley, Melissa Seitz and Taylor Numann continued their run of playing all 931 minutes this season by going the full 90 at Brown last Saturday.
Select company
Princeton has started 2-0 in Ivy League play only eight times in its 28 seasons. Five of those have come during the Julie Shackford era (1999-2002, 2004) and all six in the in NCAA tournament era have ended in postseason berths.
A class-y race
Thanks to Diana Matheson's and Regina Yang's points at Brown, the seniors moved to the front of a tight race between classes. The '08s have 15 points (Matheson nine, Melissa Whitley four, Yang two), while the juniors have 14 (Jen Om eight, Aarti Jain three, Allison Williams two), the sophomores have 12 (Marci Pasenello eight, Vicki Anagnostopoulos four) and the freshmen have 10 (Alexandra Valerio five, Libby van Beuren three, Marissa Sampias two).
On Columbia
The Lions had an eight-game unbeaten streak snapped with last Saturday's 2-1 loss to Penn. Columbia rebounded Monday with a 2-2 tie at Marist. Rookie Chrissy Butler and junior Allison Leonard have five goals apiece to lead the team with half of its 20 goals. Three Lions have split time in goal with senior Allison Vespa logging 760 of 1140 minutes, though Rebecca Taylor and SaraAnn Bennett handled the goalkeeping duties against Marist.
