Tinney Leads Men's Cross CountryTo 15th Place Finish At Pre-Nationals

Running in a field that included many of the nation's top-ranked teams, the Princeton men's cross country team finished 15th in the "White" race at the 2007 Pre-Nationals meet at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course at Indiana State Saturday morning.
Senior Frank Tinney had an outstanding finish to pace the Tigers, completing the eight-kilometer loop in a time of 23:48 for a 26th-place finish. Junior Michael Maag gave Princeton two runners in the top 50, finishing 14 seconds behind teammate Tinney in 45th position.
Senior captain and 2006 All-America David Nightingale ran in his first race of the 2007 season on Saturday and was the fifth Tiger scorer, placing 115th overall in 24:38. Nightingale had missed each of Princeton's first two races with a leg injury.
Both Ben Sitler and Ted Price finished in the top 100 in the 273-runner field in the "White" race. Sitler crossed the line 15 seconds behind Maag to finish 74th, while Price's 95th-place finish came in a time of 24:26.
Princeton's 15th-place score was 355, just behind Florida's 349 and Syracuse's 347.
20th-ranked UTEP was a surprising winner of the meet, finishing with a score of 129 and two runners in the top 10 to outdistance third-ranked Colorado by 26 places. North Carolina State, Michigan and Notre Dame rounded out the top five in the 40-team meet, one of two Pre-Nationals races run Saturday.
For Princeton, Tim O'Neill placed 175th in a time of 25:15, while Justin Pines was right behind in 25:25 for a 186th-place finish.
The Tigers head to Ivy League Heptagonals at Van Cortlandt Park in two weeks looking to defend their 2006 conference title. That meet is on Fri., Oct. 26.
