Field Hockey Starts Fast, Defeats Brown 5-0 To Keep Pace In Ivy Race
October 13, 2007 | Field Hockey
Princeton got early goals in a 1:28 span from Katie Kinzer and Kaitlin Donovan and outshot Brown 21-8 for the game on the way to a 5-0 victory over the Bears in a Ivy League field hockey game played Saturday afternoon at Warner Roof.
Kinzer started the Princeton scoring 5:04 into the first half, when she deflected a Candice Arner shot over Brown goalie Kristen Hodavance. Just more than a minute later, Kinzer led a three-on-one break for the Tigers, finding Donovan on the right side where the Princeton sophomore one-timed a shot past Hodavance for a 2-0 lead.
Princeton (7-4), which won its third straight game, improved to 4-1 in Ivy League play heading into a game at Harvard next Saturday. The Crimson were undefeated in league play entering Saturday but lost at Yale, 2-1, giving the Tigers, Crimson and Penn one league loss apiece after Saturday's games.
The Tigers would take a 4-0 lead into halftime Saturday after a pair of goals in a five-minute span midway through the first half. Candice Arner scored again 15 minutes into the game to make it 3-0, scoring on a long shot from the left side that found the far corner of the goal, while Tina Bortz made it 4-0 at the 20:40 mark when she took a pass from Kinzer and scored from the left side.
Kinzer would score for Princeton six minutes into the second half, taking a rebound of a shot by Arner off a penalty corner situation and depositing a shot past backup goalie Lauren Kessler.
Kessler had six saves in relief for Brown (0-11, 0-4 Ivy), while Cynthia Wray had four saves in the shutout win for the Tigers.
Princeton defeated Brown for the eighth consecutive season. The Tigers stay in Rhode Island Sunday, visiting Providence College for a 1 p.m. game.
