Schmidt Scores Twice in 2-1 Win at Providence
October 14, 2007 | Field Hockey
PROVIDENCE -- Senior co-captain Paige Schmidt scored two goals as the Princeton field hockey team edged Providence 2-1 on Sunday afternoon for its fourth-consecutive win. Schmidt's first goal, 11 minutes into the game, gave Princeton a lead it would not relinquish as it swept the weekend.
Schmidt and the Tigers capitalized on a corner at 11:11 when Schmidt scored her first goal of the game and her third of the season. Sophomore Christina Bortz sent the ball to junior Candice Arner on the insert, and Arner took a direct shot that Schmidt tipped into the Providence goal to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
The score remained at 1-0 in Princeton's favor through the half and Schmidt gave her team a two goal cushion less than five minutes into the second half, this time directing a crossing pass from junior Kristin Schwab into the goal.
Providence's Julie Ruggieri added a goal two minutes later, but Princeton held on through the final 30 minutes to leave Providence with a 2-1 win, its second win as many days as Princeton topped Brown 5-0 on Saturday.
Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Wray made four saves for the win, while Providence's Rachel Chamerlain had seven stops. Princeton outshot Providence 14-9 and had seven corners to Providence's four.
Princeton is now 8-4 overall and returns to action on Wednesday night when Lehigh visits Class of ?52 Stadium at 6 p.m.
