Marissa Sampias Honored as Ivy League Rookie of the Week
October 15, 2007 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- For the second straight week, a Princeton women's soccer player has received one of the Ivy League's two weekly honors. This time, Marissa Sampias was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week for scoring Princeton's second goal in a 2-0 win over Columbia.
Sampias became the 11th Tiger to score a goal this season when her first career marker came in the final seconds of Saturday's first half. Corralling a shot from Diana Matheson that bounded off the far post following a corner kick, Sampias was in position to knock it in and give the Tigers a two-goal advantage.
The win improved Princeton to 6-4-1 overall and 3-0-0 in the Ivy League as the Tigers remained in a first-place tie in the league. This season is the eighth time in the program's 28-year varsity history that the Tigers have started Ivy play 3-0. Five of those eight times have come in the last eight years.
Princeton will visit Lehigh for a 7 p.m. game Wednesday before traveling to Harvard to continue the Ivy League schedule Saturday at noon.
