The Princeton field hockey team returns to Class of '52 Stadium on Wednesday night for a non-league game against Lehigh at 6 p.m. Princeton enters the game having won its last four games and re-entered the national poll this week for the first time since the opening week of the season.
Since falling to Cornell 17 days ago, the Tigers have reeled off four consecutive wins, topping Richmond and Connecticut at home, the winning at Brown and Providence. The wins pushed Princeton's record to 8-4 overall and a No. 20 ranking in the latest STX/NFHCA National poll. Princeton was ranked 18th in the preseason poll and has been a team receiving votes in each poll since.
Last weekend the Tigers outscored the two teams that call Providence, R.I., home by a score of 7-1. It began on Saturday when the Tigers shutout Brown 5-0 to improve to 4-1 in league play. Junior co-captain Candice Arner scored two goals in the win, while junior Katie Kinzer had a goal and two assists in the win. Sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Wray made four saves for her third shutout of the season.
One day later, the Tigers moved across town to take on Providence. This time it was senior co-captain Paige Schmidt who scored twice, opening things up 11 minutes into the game with a goal, and then giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead early in the second half, before Providence made things closer with a goal. Schmidt's two goals give her four on the season. Arner, who led all Tigers with five points on the weekend with two goals and an assist, set up the first goal.
Princeton and Lehigh will meet for the 16th time and the first time since a Princeton win 1993. Princeton leads the all-time series 10-5-1 and holds a 5-3 edge at home. Princeton won the last seven meetings between the schools.
Lehigh is 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League entering tonight's game. The Mountain Hawks enter the game winners of their last two, topping Holy Cross on Saturday 3-2 in overtime, and defeating Rider 4-2 exactly one week ago. The two teams share two common opponents in Cornell and Columbia. Both fell to Cornell by a single goal, while Princeton shut out Columbia 3-0 and Lehigh fell to the Lions 2-1.
Lehigh is Princeton's third Patriot League opponent this season. The Tigers fell to American and defeated Colgate. Lehigh is 0-2 this season against the Ivy League.
After Wednesday's game, the Tigers return to Ivy action with an important game at Harvard on Saturday, which pits the Ivy League's two one-loss teams.
