The Princeton field hockey team begins a two-game non-league homestand on Friday night when the Tigers play host to Virginia Commonwealth at 6 p.m. Princeton, which clinched a share of the Ivy title last weekend, has won its last six games.
The Tigers' six-game winning streak moved Princeton's overall record to 10-4 on the season and Princeton is now 5-1 in league play with one game remaining, a week from Friday at Penn. Princeton also has a pair of non-league games on the schedule, this Friday against VCU and on Tuesday against Monmouth.
Friday night's game is Senior Night at Class of '52 Stadium as Princeton's lone senior, Paige Schmidt, will be recognized prior to the game. A two-time Ivy League Player of the Year and two-time All-America, Schmidt has recorded 60 points during her career at Princeton. She has been a two-time first-team All-Ivy selection and has five Ivy League weekly awards to her credit (two Rookie of the Week and three Player of the Week awards).
Princeton clinched a share of its third-straight Ivy League title and its 13th in the last 14 years with its 1-0 overtime win on Saturday at Harvard. Sophomore Kaitlin Donovan scored the game winner in overtime as she deflected a shot by Schmidt into the Harvard goal. Donovan's efforts were rewarded as she was named the Ivy League Player of the Week on Tuesday. Princeton also won a non-league game last week as it defeated Lehigh 4-2 on Wednesday night.
Princeton's two wins vaulted it to No. 18 in the STX/NFHCA National Poll, two spots up from the No. 20 ranking it had last week. Princeton ranks 13th in the nation in both the RPI and strength of schedule.
While Princeton is idle this weekend in league action, there are three league games this weekend that will effect the standings below the Tigers. Princeton sits atop the standings with a 5-1 record and is a full game ahead of second-place Cornell, which is 4-2. There are three 3-2 teams currently tied for third: Columbia, Harvard and Penn. Columbia visits Yale this weekend, while Harvard hosts Dartmouth and Penn travels to Brown.
Princeton faces a 5-11 overall VCU squad on Friday night. The Rams are currently 1-6 in the CAA, but have dropped several close games of late, including a 3-2 overtime loss to Old Dominion in its last game. The Rams also have one-goal losses at American, Delaware and James Madison this season. VCU enters the weekend having won just once in its last nine games, that coming on Oct. 12, a 3-0 win over Appalachian State.
Princeton and VCU share two common opponents. Both teams defeated Richmond at home and lost to American on the road. Princeton and VCU have met just once prior to Friday night's game, that coming late in the 1999 season when the Tigers won 5-1 at VCU.
Following Friday night's game, the Tigers complete the regular season home schedule on Tuesday night when Monmouth visits Class of '52 Stadium at 6 p.m.
