Three Tigers Have Multi-Point Games as Field Hockey Tops VCU 5-1
October 26, 2007 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- Three goals in the game's last 20 minutes allowed the Princeton field hockey team to pull away from Virginia Commonwealth in a 5-1 Tiger win Friday night at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The win is Princeton's seventh straight as the Ivy League-leading Tigers take a break from league action this weekend. Princeton (11-4) leads Cornell by one game as both teams have a league bye until next weekend. Princeton can clinch an Ivy title with a win next Friday at Penn, but first the Tigers will host Monmouth at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Princeton led VCU only 2-1 at halftime after the Rams' Jenna Harris scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season to halve the Tiger advantage with 3:28 to play before the half. Princeton started the scoring 14:15 into the game when Katherine Cape passed across the goal mouth to Kaitlin Donovan who was ready for the tip. Holly McGarvie had Princeton's second goal 27:46 into the game off a tip by Christina Bortz, firing it in from about 10 feet.
Though the Rams stayed within a goal for the first 15 minutes of the second half, Bortz knocked in a penalty corner shot by Paige Schmidt that was saved, doubling Princeton's lead. Less than four minutes later, McGarvie knocked in a pass from Kaitlyn Perrelle in mid-air to put Princeton ahead 4-1.
Schmidt, who was honored before the game as Princeton's lone senior, added a goal to go with her assist in her penultimate regular-season game on campus. Schmidt rocketed a shot off new Ram goaltender Laura Baker on a corner for Princeton's last goal with 1:21 to play.
Princeton held a 24-4 advantage in shots while Tiger goalkeeper Cynthia Wray needed to make just one save. VCU's starting goalkeeper, Brittany LoVullo, made eight saves while Baker had three.
