Field Hockey Routs Monmouth, 9-1, For Eighth Straight Win
October 30, 2007 | Field Hockey
Christina Bortz scored three times to lead Princeton to its largest goal total in five seasons and a 9-1 victory over Monmouth in a field hockey game played at Class of 1952 Stadium Tuesday night.
The Tigers (12-4) won their eighth straight game, their longest streak since winning 10 straight in 2001, and scored nine goals for the first time since a home win against Brown in 2002. Six Princeton players scored, including two goals from Katherine Cape off the bench.
"We wanted to work on moving the ball well and getting everyone involved," said Princeton head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn. "I think for the most part we did a good job of that tonight.."
Monmouth (4-12) briefly tied the game at 1-1 14 minutes in before the Tigers took control. Bortz scored her first goal thanks to a nice feed from Leah Hoagland just 29 seconds after the Hawks tied the game, and Kaitlyn Perrelle then scored off a rebound three minutes later to make it 3-1 Princeton.
Bortz made it 4-1 Tigers at halftime when she deftly deflected a long pass from the left sideline from Paige Schmidt past Monmouth goalie Megan Smith.
Smith made 12 saves for Monmouth as the Tigers outshot the Hawks 32-5, including 20-1 in the first half.
Princeton scored five times in a 12-minute span midway through the second half. Kraftin Schreyer's goal came on a penalty stroke after a Monmouth foul near the goal crease, while Bortz scored another on a nice feed from Kristin Schwab and Schmidt finished off a penalty corner situation with 13 minutes left.
The Tigers have now outscored Monmouth 17-2 in wins the past two seasons at Class of 1952 Stadium.
Princeton plays at Penn Friday night (7 p.m.) in the regular-season finale. A win would give the Tigers the outright Ivy League title and a berth in an NCAA play-in game next week against the winner of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
