Oakley's Three Points Leads Women's Hockey Past Clarkson
October 26, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
Senior Marykate Oakley had two goals and an assist as the Princeton
women's hockey team picked up its first win of the season on Friday
night over Clarkson. After setting up Princeton's first goal, Oakley
scored the Tigers' second and third goals as Princeton moved to 1-0-2
on the season.
Clarkson controlled play early on but found itself down 1-0 midway through the first period when Oakley made an excellent pass to spring classmate Brittany Salmon on a breakaway. Salmon faked a shot from the slot then cut to her forehand before sliding the puck by Clarkson goaltender Eve Grandmont-Berube for her second goal of the season. Despite being outshot 8-5 in the period, Princeton took that 1-0 lead to the intermission.
Princeton looked as though it would take an identical 1-0 lead into the second intermission but Clarkson scored a power-play goal with seven seconds left in the second period. Kimberly McKenney scored the goal on a point shot that was set up by Daris Tendler.
After two goals in the first 40 minutes, the team's combined for three goals in the first 9:09 of the third period. Oakley scored an even-strength goal 2:44 into the period when she redirected a pass from Salmon into the Clarkson goal. The lead last just 2:19 though before Clarkson's Jessica Cloutier slid a loose puck over the goal line just out of the reach of Tiger goaltender Kristen Young.
Princeton answered back quickly though when Oakley scored her second goal of the game and third of the season at 9:09. The goal came on the power-play as freshman Sasha Sherry took a point shot that was deflected by junior Annie Greenwood, at the top of the circles, right to Oakley who deflected it again, this time into the Clarkson goal.
With her three point performance on Friday night, Oakley now has had a hand in all six Tiger goals this season. She has three goals and has had the primary assist on the other three goals Princeton has scored.
Young finished the night with 22 saves for the win, none more important than point-blank shot by Katie Morrison in the closing minutes with her team protecting the one-goal lead. Grandmont-Berube made 18 saves in the Clarkson goal.
Princeton is now 1-0-2 overall and 1-0-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Tigers complete the weekend tomorrow afternoon against fifth-ranked St. Lawrence.
