October 27, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- St. Lawrence used a pair of first-period goals to jump to an early lead and defeated the Princeton women's hockey team 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. Down 3-0 entering the final period, senior Lizzie Keady put Princeton on the board as the Tigers attempted to comeback.
The Saints jumped out to a strong start and found themselves ahead 2-0 less than 10 minutes into play. Brittaney Maschmeyer put the Saints ahead 1-0 with a power-play goal at 5:07 of Chelsea Grills and Alison Domenico. The Saints made the score 2-0 3:23 later when Kerri Wallace scored on the rebound of a shot by Kari Emard.
St. Lawrence made the score 3-0 just 50 seconds into the second period when Tara Akstull one-timed a Grills pass into the Tiger goal. Domenico also assisted on the goal, which came six seconds after a Tiger penalty expired.
After being outshot 21-13 through two periods, the Tigers came out strong in the third, outshooting St. Lawrence 12-3 as the Tigers looked to climb back into the game. Princeton moved within two goals 2:48 into the period when Keady redirected a pass from senior Brittany Salmon by St. Lawrence goaltender Meaghan Guckian. Senior Marykate Oakley started the play in the neutral zone with a lead pass to Salmon, who carried the puck along the wing before sending a centering pass to Keady.
Princeton wound up outshooting St. Lawrence 25-24. Guckian made 24 saves for the win, while Princeton junior goaltender Kristen Young made 21 saves.
Princeton returns to action next weekend with a league weekend at Dartmouth and Harvard.
