November 17, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- The 10th-ranked Princeton women's hockey team used goals in all three
periods to defeat Colgate 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker
Rink. Junior Annie Greenwood scored the eventual game winner on the
power play at 13:09 of the first period and junior Kristen Young made 27 saves for the shutout.
Following Friday's night's disappointing loss to Cornell, Princeton came out of the gates strong and was all over Colgate early in the game. The Tigers outshot the Raiders 14-6 in the opening period and went ahead on the power play at 13:09 after Colgate was whistled for a too many players on the ice penalty. Princeton established pressure in the Colgate end and went ahead when Greenwood scored her fourth goal of the season from in front as she stuff in the rebound of a blocked point shot from junior Katherine Dineen.
Colgate pressured Princeton early in the second period, but it was the Tigers that were able to build on their lead in the second period when sophomore Julie Flynn netted her first collegiate goal at 11:18. Freshman Sasha Sherry took a point shot that was redirected on goal by freshman Caroline Park. Colgate goaltender Lisa Plenderleith made the initial save but Flynn crashed the net and knocked the rebound into the net to put Princeton on top 2-0.
Princeton added its third and final goal of the night midway through the third period when senior Brittany Salmon scored a shorthanded goal on a breakaway. Senior Marykate Oakley picked up the puck in the Tiger zone and lofted the puck down the ice. When the puck landed in the Colgate zone, Salmon was already a step ahead of the Colgate defense and she went in to score her fourth goal of the season.
Young made 27 saves for the win and shutout, including 13 in the second period and 11 on the power play. Plenderleith made 28 saves in the Raider goal.
The win moved Princeton back to .500 at 4-4-2 overall and 2-4-1 in ECAC Hockey. Colgate fell to 3-6-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the league. Princeton resumes its schedule on the Friday after Thanksgiving at home against Mercyhurst.
