Overtime Unkind to Women's Hoops as Tigers fall to Delaware State 63-62
November 17, 2007 | Women's Basketball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Turnovers and too many second chances for Delaware State kept the Princeton women's basketball team from getting its first win of the season Saturday night at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. as the Hornets won 63-62 in overtime to close the Preseason WNIT.
Princeton (0-4) committed 24 turnovers and was outrebounded 40-34 with 20 of those Delaware State (1-2) rebounds coming on the offensive end. That allowed the Hornets to overcome a significant shooting percentage deficit of 49 percent (24 of 49) for Princeton to 37.7 percent (26 of 69) for Delaware State.
Meagan Cowher led Princeton with a season-high 24 points, upping her career total to 1,210 in her second straight 20-point game. With the performance, Cowher moved into eighth place on the Princeton all-time list. Cowher narrowly missed a double-double with eight rebounds and freshman Addie Micir also just missed that statistical achievement with a career-best 12 points and eight boards.
The Tigers closed the first half with a 9-0 run to take a 31-21 lead into the break, but Delaware State had the Princeton lead down to two before four minutes were gone in the second half. It was a tight battle the rest of the way and Delaware State took a two-point lead at 56-53 with 28 seconds left on a pair of free throws.
But with time ticking down, Whitney Downs delivered for the Tigers with one of her two three-pointers to tie the game at 56-56 with nine seconds left. Delaware State didn't get up a clean attempt on its last possession of regulation, and the Tigers headed to overtime for the first time since Feb. 1, 2005 at Penn.
Cowher gave the Tigers a 58-56 lead to start the overtime before the Hornets' Katreem Palmer hit a three to take the advantage back for Delaware State at 59-58. Princeton got a fortunate break when Delaware State's Ashley Thompson missed the front end of a one-and-one, and Micir hit both on her one-and-one chance to retake a 60-59 lead for the Orange and Black.
Downs upped the lead to 62-59 with a layup, but Ashlee Burbage got it right back with a long two to bring the Hornets within 62-61 with 42 seconds left.
Delaware State stole the ball and called timeout with 18 seconds left, and the Hornets evidently drew up a successful play as Jameka Smith drove the lane for a layup and a 63-62 lead. Princeton came up empty on its last possession and the Tigers were made to leave Alabama without a win.
Princeton will try for its first victory of the season Tuesday in the home opener against Lehigh at 7 p.m.
