Women's Squash Completes 2007 Portion Of Season With Third Straight 9-0 Victory
December 02, 2007 | Women's Squash
Chances are, somebody on the Princeton women's squash team will lose a match this season, but it will have to wait until 2008. Princeton completed the brief 2007 portion of its season with a third straight 9-0 victory Sunday. The defending national champions defeated Williams, although the showdown at No. 1 proved to be the highlight match of the season's first month.
Siebert, who moved up to No. 1 this weekend while Neha Kumar sat out, dropped the opening game 9-0 and was extended in the second game before managing a 10-8 win. Toby Eyre took a 2-1 lead with a 9-4 win, but Siebert settled and controlled the final two games to win 9-3 and 9-1.
"Toby Eyre is a good competitor and we always have a long tough match," Siebert said. "Toby is very quick and great at getting back balls, so it was key in my match today that i stay especially patient and expect her to retrieve all my shots. Overall it was a great weekend for princeton squash and only the start of a long and exciting season."
"Amanda Siebert started off a bit slow and tentative and just could not get things started in the first game," head coach Gail Ramsay said. "I think it was a matter of just getting a but more aggressive and into the match. I was most impressed with Toby Eyre's fight and determination. She played well and never gave Amanda anything. I think the fifth game could have gone either way but I think Amanda was a little fitter and she was able to frustrate Toby with her awesome court coverage. It was really a great match and both players played well enough to win."
While Princeton claimed seven of the other eight matches by 3-0 scores, the matches at the top of the lineup proved to be fairly close. Freshman Jackie Moss worked hard to win all three games in a 9-5, 9-7, 9-6 victory, while Emery Maine overcame a third-game loss to pull out a 9-0, 9-4, 5-9, 9-4. Sophomore Kaitlin Sennatt, who still has yet to lose a collegiate match, pulled out a close 10-8 win in the third game to complete her victory at No. 4.
"This was our first weekend of matches at home, so overall the girls were excited and fired up to play," said No. 6 Margaret Kent, who earned a 9-3, 9-5, 9-1 victory. "We knew we needed to be aggressive from the start, and each teammate carried that attitude and
determination on court today."
"The team felt confident as we entered our match against Williams today," Moss said. "We have been training hard all year and we knew Williams would be a good test for us."
Princeton will next compete in the Constable Invitational, considered one of the top individual tournaments in women's college squash at home from Jan. 12-13.
