Women's Water Polo Splits First Two Games of 2007

SAN DIEGO -- The 18th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team split its first two games of the 2007 season, falling to 17th-ranked UC San Diego 10-9 in overtime, and defeating league rival Maryland 15-12 on Saturday at UCSD's Triton Invitational. Senior Elyse Colgan scored seven goals in the two games for the Tigers.
Regulation ended with the teams tied up at 9-9, and only UCSD was able to score in the two overtime periods to prevail 10-9. Colgan got things going for the Tigers, scoring Princeton's first three goals in a back-and-forth game. Colgan led the Princeton charge, adding an assist, two steals and drawing six ejections. Princeton, which struggled in man-up situations, going for 2 for 10, had several chances to extend close leads, but was unable to convert and UCSD was able to pull out the victory.
Princeton freshmen Helen Meigs and Lauren Sabb each scored two goals in their collegiate debut, while senior Karina Reyner and freshman Phoebe Champion both added single goals. Junior Natalie Kim made nine saves in goal for the Tigers.

Princeton was back in action later in the day against league-rival Maryland, which lost to Loyola Marymount earlier in the day. The game was back-and-forth and close throughout before Princeton pulled away late in the action. Colgan again led the Princeton offensive attack, scoring four times. Maryland scored the game's first three goals, but Princeton stormed back to take a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, and held the one-goal lead at halftime, 9-8.
Reyner had three goals for Princeton in the game, and senior Jazmin Brown, Champion and Sabb each added two goals. Kim made her second nine save performance of the day.
The Tigers will meet No. 15 Long Beach State tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Long Beach State also split its games on Saturday, falling to No. 14 Hartwick and defeating No. 19 Cal. State Bakersfield.
