Tigers Split Games at Maryland Invitational

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The 17th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team split a pair of games on Saturday, falling to No. 16 Michigan 10-8 and defeating Marist 11-5. Both games took place at the Maryland Invitational and moved Princeton's record to 3-3 this season.
Princeton opened the tournament by facing the team ranked one spot ahead of it in the national polls, No. 16 Michigan. The Tigers emerged from the first half with a 5-4 lead in a tight back-and-forth half of play, but Michigan the defense shut down the Tigers in the third quarter and the Wolverines converted on their chances to hold an 8-5 lead after three periods. Princeton closed the gap by a goal in the final period.
Senior Elyse Colgan and freshman Lauren Sabb paced the Tigers with three goals each, while sophomore Kara Murphy and freshman Helen Meigs each added a single goal. Junior Natalie Kim made seven saves in goal.
In the day's second game Princeton jumped to an early lead on Marist and pulled away late for an 11-5 win. Colgan and freshman Phoebe Champion led the way with three goals each and Kim made a season-high 12 saves. Princeton led 6-3 at the half and extended its lead to 10-3 with four unanswered goals in the third period.
Princeton faces Hartwick and Indiana tomorrow in the tournament.
