February 19, 2007 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Princeton women's soccer head coach Julie Shackford is south of the border this week, assisting with the U.S. Under-20 Women's National Team as it prepares for the U-20 Women's World Cup in Chile in fall 2008.
The team will be playing the full Mexican women's national team at Ixtapan de la Sal, near Mexico City, on Tuesday and Thursday. Mexico is preparing for two play-in matches with Japan next month that will decide which of the two teams qualifies for the 2007 Women's World Cup in China, where Princeton's Diana Matheson will be playing for Team Canada.
Featuring 18 players from colleges and club teams across the country, the U-20 Women's National Team is coached by Jillian Ellis, who attained the post just last month. Shackford and Ellis, the coach at UCLA for the last eight seasons, were teammates and classmates at William and Mary, where both are 1988 graduates.
Shackford, who has previous experience with U.S. national teams while assisting with the Under-21 squad, has guided the Tigers for 12 seasons and led the team to six straight NCAA tournament berths from 1999-2004.
