Yale Jumps to Early Lead, Holds Off Princeton 6-3

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Princeton men's hockey team fell behind late in the first period was unable to climb back as Yale defeated Princeton 6-3 on Saturday night at Ingalls Rink. The Tigers scored three goals in the third period as they looked to climb back into the game, but the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome.
Yale took advantage of a two-man advantage late in the first period to jump to a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first of two 5 on 3 goals for Yale on the night and gave the Bulldogs a lead it would not relinquish. The first goal came at 16:53 of the period from Sean Backman who one-timed a pass from Matt Cohen at the right face-off dot.
Yale extended its lead 1:38 later when Will Engasser's redirected shot eluded Princeton senior goaltender B.J. Sklapsky. After a face-off win by Yale, Robert Page took a shot from the point that Engasser deflected over the shoulder of Sklapsky to make the score 2-0, which is how the first period ended.
Yale padded its lead with two more goals in the second period. The first of those goals came at 4:34 and was also a two-man advantage score as Brad Mills one-timed Chris Cahill's pass from behind the net for the goal. Yale added to its lead when Mark Arcobello scored in transition at 15:03. David Inman fed him a pass at the Tiger blueline and he can in and tucked a shot just inside the near post to give Yale a 4-0 lead.
Princeton came out for the third period strong as it looked to climb back into the game and outshot Yale 23-7 in the period and got back in the game with a power-play goal at 5:59 when senior Max Cousins scored his third goal of the season. The goal actually came on a 5 on 3 as Princeton had a man advantage and the Tigers pulled Sklapsky in favor the extra attacker. Junior Mike Moore and senior Kevin Westgarth also assisted on the goal.
The Tigers continued to try and pull Sklapsky for offensive zone draws and that bit at 10;37 when Backman got a bounce and was able to score into the empty net. Yale quickly added its third power-play goal of the game at 12:14 when Arcobello one-timed a Backman pass, before Princeton closed the gap to 6-3 with two late goals.
Both goals came on the power play. First, at 16:08 freshman Kevin Crane worked the puck to senior Darroll Powe, who capped his rush into the zone by shooting his rebound by Yale netminder Matt Modelski for his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Princeton made the score 6-3 less than a minute later when Jubinville netted his eighth goal of the season on the rebound of a point shot. Cousins and Moore assisted on the goal, both garnering their second points of the night.
Sklapsky finished the night with 27 saves while Modelski made 32. Princeton, which was outshot 27-12 entering the third period, wound up outshooting Yale for the game, but fell too far behind early and could never draw even.
The Tigers fell to 9-11-3 with the loss and are now 6-8-2 in the league. Yale is also 9-11-3 overall and now 6-9-1 in the league. Princeton returns home next Friday night to host Harvard at 7 p.m.
