Davidson's Walk-Off Grand Slam Sinks Tigers
March 21, 2007 | Baseball
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson's Gregory Zage hit a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to lead his team to a 7-6 win over the Princeton baseball team on Wednesday night at Wilson Field. Senior Sal Iacono and sophomore Adrian Turnham both drove in a pair of runs in a game that the Tigers led 6-2 entering the final inning.
Princeton got the game started off in the top of the first with one run as Iacono doubled home senior Aaron Prince. Davidson quickly countered though with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Both were unearned as a walk and a fielder's choice with a two-base error allowed the first run to score. A groundout pushed Davidson's next runner to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly.
The score stayed at 2-1 in the Wildcats' favor for the next four innings until Princeton put four runs on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. Three consecutive singles to begin the inning plating freshman Greg Van Horn with the first run, and the next two runners came home on a single up the middle by Turnham. Princeton added the fourth run of the inning when freshman Brian Berkowitz singled in junior Spencer Lucian. Princeton tacked on an addition run in the seventh to make the score 6-2 when Iacono singled home junior Micah Kaplan.
Trailing 6-2 entering the ninth, Davidson took advantage of its final at bat to rally for the win. After a leadoff walk, the Tigers got the first out on a strikeout. Another walk put two on before a fly ball gave Davidson two outs. The Wildcats then drew back-to-back walks to force home their third run of the game. That left the bases loaded for Zage, who connected on a 1-2 pitch with a grand-slam walk-off homer to right field.
Senior Michael Zaret took the loss as he allowed five runs in 1.1 innings of work. Freshman starter David Hale allowed two unearned runs in the first six innings of the game. Davidson used six pitchers in the game, with the last one, Matt Webb, taking the win.
Princeton falls to 3-8 with the loss and takes tomorrow off, before returning to action on Friday night at Longwood.
