Longwood Shuts Out Princeton 4-0
March 23, 2007 | Baseball
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood limited Princeton to five hits as the Lancers defeated the Tiger baseball team 4-0 on Friday night at Lancer Field. Freshman David Hale had two hits for the Tigers.
Princeton had five hits in the game, two coming off the bat of Hale. Senior Sal Iacono, junior Spencer Lucian and freshman Jack Murphy also had hits.
Longwood took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Robbie Bailey bunted for a base hit with one out and went to third on a Jon Quigley single. With two outs, Quigley broke to steal second and after the throw, Bailey broke home and was able to score before the ball made it back.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Longwood added another run. Topher Ellis hit a leadoff double that dropped just out of the reach of Princeton freshman David Hale in right field. A sac bunt moved him to third base and he scored on a single by Bailey.
Longwood extended the lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Longwood drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning before a sac bunt and an error loaded the bases. The next batter hit a fly ball to the warning track over the head of the left fielder, allowing a run to be scored and keeping the bases full. The next batter hit into a double play, scoring the fourth Longwood run.
Junior Christian Staehely started the game and allowed two runs on eight hits in five innings. Senior Gavin Fabian came on in the sixth and allowed two runs. Longwood's Brian McCullough pitched the complete game shutout.
