Hynes in Eighth After First Day of NCAA Heptathlon; Women's DMR Finishes Eighth
March 09, 2007 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
Princeton sophomore Duane Hynes is in eighth place after the first day of competition in the heptathlon at the 2007 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships at Arkansas's Randal Tyson Track Center. Hynes had a first-day score of 3,072 after four events.
The Tigers also scored a point on the women's side late Friday night when Princeton's distance medley relay team finished eighth out of 13 teams in that event, won by North Carolina. The Princeton team of freshman Christy Johnson (1,200), sophomore Agatha Offorjebe (400), freshman Liz Costello (800) and senior Catha Mullen (mile) finished the race in a time of 11:14.20. The group had qualified for the NCAA championship meet after running second in the event at the ECAC championships last weekend.
Tiger distance standout David Nightingale ran in the preliminaries of the mile on Friday afternoon. His time of 4:05.92 for the eight laps was good for fifth in his heat but did not qualify him for Saturday's final a tightly contested field where the top 10 runners were separated by less than four seconds.
Hynes, Princeton's recordholder in the heptathlon, trails leader Donovan Kilmartin of Texas by 244 points heading into Saturday's final three events. He had strong finishes in two field events Friday, as his long jump of 23 feet, 1 1/4 inches on his second attempt was fourth among the heptathlon competitors and his high jump of six feet, seven inches was good for a tie for fourth.
