April 06, 2007 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
A win in the 1,500-meter elite race by junior David Nightingale and the top collegiate finishes in three other races for Princeton athletes highlighted Tiger action on the first night of the 10th Annual Sam Howell Invitational Friday night at Weaver Track & Field Stadium.
Nightingale, an All-America in the mile for Princeton during the indoor season, bested a strong 1,500-meter field on a cold night by winning the race in a time of 3:47.86. He was followed closely in third place by teammate James O'Toole, who ran a 3:48.90.
On the women's side, two Tigers were the top collegiate finishers in their respective races. Megan Brandeland finished second overall and first among collegiate runners in the women's steeplechase with a time of 10:49.48, while freshman Christy Johnson was the top collegiate runner and the third-place overall finisher in the 5,000 meters in a time of 16:40.63. Sophomore Jolee VanLeuven was right behind Johnson as the second collegiate finisher.
The Tigers also had a top collegiate finisher on the men's side in the 5,000 meters as Justin Pines finished the 12 1/2 laps in a time of 14:21.38 to finish second overall among race competitors.
Freshman Liz Costello nearly won the 1,500-meter elite race on the women's side for Princeton but finished less than a second behind a Villanova runner in second place.
Bucknell's Matthew Forys was the winner in the men's steeplechase, while Harvard's Brian Holmquest was the only finisher under the 30-minute mark in winning the 10,000 meters on the men's side. Clarion's Erin Richard won the women's 10,000-meter race by more than a minute to conclude the evening's races.
Action in the Sam Howell Invitational continues Saturday at Weaver Track.
