April 13, 2007 | Women's Water Polo
The 16th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team returns from a two-week layoff tonight with its final two league games of the season before the CWPA Southern Championships take place next weekend at Maryland.
Princeton begins the weekend tonight at 7:30 p.m. when it visits Bucknell. The Tigers then play George Washington at Bucknell's pool tomorrow at 12 noon.
Princeton is currently 4-0 in Southern Division play, which has clinched the Tigers the top seed at Southern's. Maryland has clinched the second seed with its 4-2 record, and Bucknell (1-3) and George Washington (0-4) complete the standings. Princeton will face whichever team finishes the season in fourth place, while Maryland will face the other in the second semifinal game. Those games will take place next Saturday.
Princeton is currently 15-7 overall and has won five of its last six games, defeating Maryland and George Washington on the road two weekends ago, and taking three of its last four games of its Spring Break trip, the only loss coming to top-ranked Stanford.
Friday's opponent is Bucknell, a team which Princeton is 21-0 against all-time. The Tigers have faced Bucknell once this season, and won that game 15-12 on March 9. Bucknell is currently 12-13 this season. Princeton continues the weekend against GW. The Colonials are 6-17 this season and have dropped three straight. Princeton won the earlier meeting of the teams 13-3 on March 31 in Washington, D.C.
Senior Elyse Colgan leads Princeton with 61 goals this season and currently ranks 12th in the nation in goals scored. Colgan is one of six Tigers to have double-digit goal totals. Senior Karina Reyner ranks second with 36 goals and freshman Phoebe Champion comes next with 33 goals. Classmate Lauren Sabb is one goal behind with 32. Another freshman, Helen Meigs, leads the squad in assists, adding 33 helpers this season, while Reyner and senior Samantha Shaughnessy each have 45 steals to lead the Tigers.
As a team Princeton ranks ninth in the country in goals per game with 10.6. The Tigers have totaled 233 goals in 22 games this season. Princeton is the 28th-best team defensively, allowing 8.7 goals per game.
