April 21, 2007 | Men's Track and Field
Outstanding sprint finishes both by individuals and in relay events carried the day for the Princeton men's track team Saturday afternoon at the 2007 Larry Ellis Invitational at Weaver Track & Field Stadium.
Princeton won the 4X400 relay Saturday and finished a close second in a hotly-contested 4X100 relay earlier in the day. The Tigers also had three of the top performers in the 400 meters and were a close second in fast times in both the 100 and 200 meters.
Brian Shields was the 400 meter winner for Princeton in an impressive time of 48.17 seconds, while Matt Brock was second in 48.72 and Brian Li-A-Ping fourth in 48.80 seconds. Shafiq Kashmiri ran times of 10.75 seconds in the 100 meters and 21.55 seconds in the 200 meters to finish a tight second in both races Saturday.
The Tigers' 4X400 relay team featured Li-A-Ping, Brock, Ian Thomson and anchor Rich Stewart, and that group won its race by more than three seconds in a time of 3:14.36 seconds.
Another Princeton runner, Jeff Carbonella, was a race winner in the 800 meters Saturday in a time of 1:54.92.
In the field events, Eric Plummer had a superb throw in the shot put, an NCAA regional qualifying toss of 56 feet, 4 inches.
The Tigers also had the top collegiate finishers in three other field events. Alex Pessala's hammer throw on Saturday was 193 feet, nine inches, while Nathan Crumpton's triple jump of 47 feet, 9 3/4 inches was the top collegiate finish in that event. Alex Willis's leap of 6-8 1/4 in the high jump was second overall and top among collegians.
Princeton also had a third-place finish on the track from Tom Zozokos, who ran 54.26 in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles. In Saturday's 1,500 meters, Eric Beights had a fourth-place finish in a time of 3:56.90.
