Distance Runners Shine For Princeton at Penn Relays Thursday Night

Princeton's strong group of distance runners had stellar performances Thursday night at the Penn Relays, with top four finishes in the women's "championship" races by Reilly Kiernan in the 3,000 meters and Catha Mullen in the 5,000 meters highlighting Tiger performances.
Mullen finished third in a 29-person field in the 5,000-meter championship race in a time of 16:19.24, just two seconds off the second-place time. Kiernan was the fourth-place finisher out of 29 runners in the 3,000-meter championship field in a time of 9:39.06, less than a second behind the second-place time.
The Tigers also had a race winner Thursday night in the "college" division of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where Megan Brandeland was a big winner in a time of 10:41.16. Her Princeton teammate Jen Johnson was second in a time of 10:54.42.
On the men's side, Princeton had participants in both the "championship" and "college" sections of the 5,000 meters Thursday night. Frank Tinney was a solid 10th out of more than 30 runners in the championship section in a time of 14:06.73, while Ben Sitler ran a 14:43.88 in the college section of the event.
Princeton also ran in the women's Distance Medley Championship of America race on Thursday and finished seventh in a field of strong teams. Christy Johnson, Agatha Offorjebe, Liz Bergold and Liz Costello completed the race in 11:23.66. The distance medley is a relay featuring legs of 1,200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters and the mile.
Jolee VanLeuven was 10th for Princeton in the 5,000 meter championship race on the women's side, giving the Tigers two top 10 finishers in the event, while Caitlin McTague ran in the "Olympic Development" section of the 5,000 meters and finished in a time of 16:57.29 for ninth place.
