June 13, 2007 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Esmeralda Negron, a 2005 Princeton graduate and the women's soccer team's all-time leading scorer, is playing for the New Jersey Wildcats of the W-League. Ron Celestin, a Tiger assistant coach, is serving in the same role with the Wildcats.
The Wildcats are 3-0-2 after starting the season with two ties and winning their three games so far in June. On June 9, the Wildcats defeated Jersey Sky Blue, 1-0, for their third straight win. Jersey Sky Blue then went on to play to a scoreless draw with the Chinese National Team later in the week.
Negron has a goal and two assists on the season, scoring in New Jersey's 3-0 win over Western Massachusetts on June 3. The Wildcats are scheduled to have four more home games during the regular season, all played at Mercer County Community College. The first of those is June 16, followed by June 20, July 1 and July 4, with all four starting at 7 p.m.
During her collegiate career, Negron was a two-time All-America, two-time Ivy League Player of the Year and three-time first-team All-Ivy honoree. She finished with 47 career goals, bettering the previous mark by six, and 112 career points, topping the prior record by 18. Princeton made the NCAA tournament all four years with Negron, culminating in a College Cup semifinal appearance in 2004. Beyond Princeton, Negron played with the U.S. national U-21 team.
It was announced in April that Negron will serve as an assistant coach at Seton Hall University for the coming season.
