Princeton distance running standout David Nightingale, an All-America in all three seasons in 2006-07, has earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors in voting announced Tuesday.
Nightingale, a politics major who will be a senior in 2007-08, was named to the third team in the Academic All-America University Division in Men's Track & Field/Cross Country. He was one of just 45 track & field athletes from NCAA Division I to earn national Academic All-America honors.
The West Hartford, Conn., native led Princeton to its first Ivy League Heptagonal cross country championship since 1999 with a third-place individual finish before going on to earn All-America honors competing as an individual at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships. He finished in 39th place overall in that race, improving by nearly 50 places from a season earlier.
Nightingale was then instrumental in giving Princeton its 10th indoor Heptagonals title in the last 14 seasons, winning both the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter races at the event and finishing the 5,000 with the third-best time in indoor Heps history. He then qualified for the NCAA championships in the mile, where he again earned All-America honors by place eighth in a time of 4:03.13.
In the outdoor season, Nightingale nearly set a school record in the 5,000 meters at the Mt. Sac Relays before finishing eighth in that race at the NCAA championship meet in Sacramento, earning All-America honors for the third time.
