Women's Soccer's Matheson Helping Team Canada to Monday's Semifinals at Pan-Am Games
July 18, 2007 | Women's Soccer
Team Canada has advanced to the semifinal round in women's soccer at the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Diana Matheson, a rising senior midfielder on the Princeton women's soccer team, has started on the pitch in all four contests so far.
The Canadians will face a familiar foe in Team USA Monday at 6 p.m. Eastern Time (7 p.m. local time), just after Brazil takes on Mexico in the other semifinal on the same field. Whatever the outcome, Matheson and Canada will have another game, as the bronze-medal contest will take place Thursday at 8 a.m. ET with the gold-medal game following.
Matheson, who is one assist shy of matching the Princeton career record, played from the starting whistle to the final horn in Canada's triumphs over Uruguay, Ecuador and Jamaica before playing the first 79 minutes Friday against host Brazil. Through its first three games, Canada had outscored its opponents 22-1, holding Uruguay and Ecuador scoreless and doing the same with Jamaica until a 60th-minute goal last Wednesday. Brazil handed Canada its first defeat in a 7-0 decision Friday.
Matheson contributed a 53rd-minute goal in Canada's 7-0 win over Uruguay on July 14.
