Women's Soccer's Diana Matheson Earns Bronze Medal with Canada at Pan-Am Games
July 26, 2007 | Women's Soccer
Diana Matheson, a rising senior on the Princeton women's soccer team, played all 90 minutes for the fifth time in six contests at the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as Team Canada topped Mexico 2-1 to win the bronze medal.
Matheson has been playing with the full Canadian national team since 2003, participating in the Women's World Cup and Olympic qualifying that year. Brazil is one of 17 countries in which Matheson has played representing Canada.
At the Pan-Am Games, Matheson played all 90 minutes of Canada's first three pool play games against Uruguay, Paraguay and Ecuador, scoring a goal early in the second half against Uruguay. She split time in Canada's loss to Brazil before going the distance once again in a 2-1 semifinal loss to the United States that put Canada in the consolation final.
Thursday, Christine Sinclair scored in the 21st minute and Kristina Kiss doubled the lead in first-half extra time before Mexico's Teresa Worbis knocked in a penalty kick in the 65th minute to get the deficit back to one goal.
Matheson is slated to compete next for Canada at the Women's World Cup in China. The Canadians are in Group C with Australia, Ghana and Norway, starting group play with the Norwegians on Sept. 12.
Matheson's run with Canada at the Pan-Am Games encountered another Princeton connection along the way. The United States was represented by its Under-20 national team, which is coached by Jillian Ellis, a teammate of Princeton coach Julie Shackford's at William and Mary. Shackford served with Ellis as an assistant coach for the U-20 team in Mexico this spring as it prepared for the Pan-Am Games.
