Field Hockey Pulls Away for 4-1 Win at Dartmouth
September 15, 2007 | Field Hockey
HANOVER, N.H. -- The Princeton field hockey team scored three times in the second half to break a 1-1 tied and pull away for a 4-1 win at Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Tina Bortz scored twice for the Tigers, who improved to 2-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Ivy League.
Dartmouth opened the scoring just 2:38 into the game by converting on the game's first shot. Whitney Waugh fired a shot from the top of the circle that Ashley Hines redirected to give the Big Green a 1-0 lead.
That lead lasted two seconds less than 10 minutes before Bortz evened up the score with her second goal of the season. The sophomore controlled the ball in the circle and fired a shot past Dartmouth goalkeeper Jordan Sedlacek.
The first half ended with the score tied, but Princeton came out determined to go ahead in the second half, controlling play and finally taking the lead for good at 47:26. Princeton outshot Dartmouth 17-4 in the second half and broke the deadlock by converting off the pressure of three straight corners.
Princeton's leading scorer entering the game, junior Holly McGarvie, collected the ball on the right side of the circle. After creating some room, she took a shot towards the goal that junior Katie Kinzer got a stick on and deflected by Sedlacek for her second tally of the season.
The Tigers weren't done there, and their continuous pressure paid off again 10 minutes later when junior Kristin Schwab scored her first goal of the season. Senior Paige Schmidt carried the ball into the circle and took a backhanded shot that was blocked to the opposite side of the circle. The blocked shot doubled for a perfect pass to Schwab who put the ball into the wide-open goal to give Princeton a two-goal edge.
The Tigers added a final insurance goal with 3:12 remaining in the game as Bortz netted her second goal of the game and her third of the season off a feed from Schmidt.
Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Cynthia Wray made a single save to record her second win of the season, while Sedlacek made 10 saves in the loss. Princeton edged Dartmouth in shots 26-6 for the game.
Princeton resumes play with two home games next weekend. The Tigers host Columbia and Colgate on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
