Volleyball Upsets Host Villanova To Complete Saturday Sweep
September 15, 2007 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team earned its most impressive nonleague win in years Saturday, defeating Big East representative Villanova 3-2 to close competition at the 2007 Villanova Tournament. Princeton, which topped Binghamton 3-1 Saturday morning, went 3-1 for the weekend and now stand 5-3 on the season.
The Tigers won a 30-21, 19-30, 34-32, 23-30, 15-6 thriller over Villanova by hitting effectively, especially in the decisive final game. Junior middle Lindsey Ensign led Princeton with 20 kills and a .500 attack percentage, while fellow junior Parker Henritze recorded 14 kills and team highs in both digs (21) and aces (six). Sophomore Sheena Donohue, the hero of the victory over Binghamton, recorded 19 kills and 10 digs. Junior Bailey Robinson led Princeton with 64 digs, while senior libero Jenny McReynolds recorded 13 digs. Sophomore rightside Taylor Carroll had nine kills and a .467 attack percentage.
Princeton, which claimed the opener by hitting .484 as a team, led 29-28 in the third game. Villanova fought off one game ball, and the two teams sided out until a Donohue kill moved the lead to 33-32. Princeton took the game with another Donohue kill on the ensuing point. After losing game four, Princeton sprinted out of the gates to claim the fifth. Three-point service runs by both Henritze and Robinson helped build an insurmountable lead, and freshman Elizabeth McStravick sent the final kill to end the match.
Princeton won the opener 28-30, 30-16, 30-21, 30-20 over Binghamton. Donohue led the Tigers with 17 kills and 24 digs, while Henritze had 17 kills, 13 digs and five aces. Robinson had 59 assists and 17 digs, while McReynolds had a match-best 31 digs. Carroll added 11 kills with zero errors for a .423 hitting percentage.
