The Princeton field hockey team brings a four-game win streak into a tough test on Wednesday night at second-ranked Maryland. The Tigers have reeled off four wins in a row after an 0-2 start to the season and will look to carry that momentum onto the field against the defending National Champion.
Princeton swept games over the weekend, shutting out Columbia and Colgate a combined 8-0. On Saturday Princeton improved to 3-0 in the Ivy League with a 3-0 win over Columbia. The win was Princeton's 17th consecutive Ivy League win and its 11th in a row against the Lions. The game was scoreless through halftime before Princeton put it away late. Junior Kraftin Schreyer scored her first collegiate goal on a penalty stroke to put Princeton ahead for good and senior Paige Schmidt and Sarah Reinprecht added goals. Sophomore Cynthia Wray made two saves in earning her second shutout of the season.
A day later, the Tigers were able to get on the board early and they never looked back in a 5-0 win over Colgate. Sophomore Tina Bortz scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year to put Princeton on the board and classmate Kaitlyn Perrelle and junior Kristin Schwab added first half goals to make the score 3-0. In the second half, junior Leah Hoagland and sophomore Katherine Cape added goals for the 5-0 final. Wray earned the win in goal with a scoreless first half. Freshman Jennifer King made five saves in the second half to keep Colgate at bay in her first collegiate appearance.
Princeton offense was balanced in the two-game sweep, as the team's eight goals came from eight different players. Two Tigers, Bortz and Perrelle, had a goal and an assist over the weekend, while three, Schreyer, Cape and Perrelle, scored their first collegiate goals.
Princeton continues its busy stretch of five games in eight days on Wednesday at Maryland. The span started last Saturday against Columbia and extends to this Sunday at home against Richmond. It also includes an Ivy League game this Sunday against Cornell.
Princeton faces Maryland tomorrow night in the 17th meeting between the two schools. Maryland leads the series 11-4-1 and has won nine-straight meetings. The Terps lead the series 6-2-1 at home. Last year Maryland topped Princeton 4-1, coming back from a 1-0 deficit at halftime. Bortz scored for Princeton in the loss. Princeton's last win over Maryland came in the 1998 season.
Maryland enters the game 9-0 this season and is 2-0 in the ACC. The Terps have won 13-straight dating back a season and are the two-time defending National Champions. Maryland played twice last weekend, defeating American and Wake Forest. American is the only common opponent shared by both Princeton and Maryland. Princeton fell to American 3-2 in the season opener, while Maryland won 4-0 at American last week.
