Women's Soccer Wins Ivy Opener 2-1 at Dartmouth
September 29, 2007 | Women's Soccer
HANOVER, N.H. -- For the first time since 2004, the Princeton women's soccer team began its Ivy League season with a win, and that year turned out to be very special for the Tigers.
With a 2-1 victory Saturday night at Dartmouth, the Tigers earned a quarter-share of first place following the first Ivy League weekend, and their coach Julie Shackford, earned herself a half-share of Princeton history. The victory was her 136th in her 13th season with the Orange and Black. While Shackford became the school's all-time winningest women's soccer coach in 2000, she now shares the title of all-time winningest soccer coach, men's or women's, with Jimmy Reed, who guided the men's team from 1938-66.
The Dartmouth game was also the season debut for Princeton senior midfielder Diana Matheson, a three-time first-team All-Ivy choice and a 2004 NSCAA first-team All-America, who was playing for Team Canada in the Women's World Cup in China.
"To have Diana back gave us momentum," Shackford said. "I think she was able to connect us and give us a real boost of confidence. She did a good job of putting passes in great places tonight."
Alexandra Valerio used her speed and Marissa Sampias employed a strong boot to get Princeton's first goal 10:58 into the first half. From near the midfield line, Sampias knocked a ball ahead of Valerio charging toward the 18-yard box. Valerio raced past two Dartmouth defenders, drew Big Green keeper Laurel Peak well off the goal line and knocked it inside the far post.
Princeton outshot Dartmouth 8-5 in the opening half with each goalkeeper making two saves.
Melissa Whitley, a senior defender, scored her first career goal and Princeton's second goal of the night 28:17 into the second half. Off back-to-back corner kicks by Libby Van Beuren, Whitley headed the second corner down and into the net, doubling Princeton's lead.
"It feels amazing," Whitley said of the goal and the win. "It's good for us. Now we've won on the road and we have the mindset to win the rest of our games."
"Libby, Aarti Jain and Marci Pasenello came off the bench and made a big difference for us," Shackford added.
Maren Dale shutout Dartmouth for the game's first 87 minutes before Maggie Goldstein rocketed a shot from beyond the 18-yard box and just over Dale's reach.
With the victory, the Tigers earned their first road win. Dale made three saves to seven for Peak as the Tigers outshot Dartmouth 16-13 on the night.
Princeton improved to 3-4-1 with the win after beginning the season playing five teams ranked or receiving votes in a national poll at the time of the game. Tuesday on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium, the Tigers will take on another ranked school, Rutgers. Though new polls will come out prior to the game, the Scarlet Knights entered the week ranked 24th by the NSCAA and SoccerTimes. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. and will be shown on CSTV Friday at 8 p.m.
