Women's Volleyball Falls In Syracuse Tournament Opening Matches
September 08, 2007 | Women's Volleyball
The 2007 Princeton women's volleyball team wanted to challenge itself early against teams from top conferences, and the Tigers found those challenges in the first two matches of their season-opening Syracuse Tournament. Despite showing some positive signs, both individually and collectively, Princeton fell to both Syracuse and Texas Tech.
In Friday night's opener against the host Orangewomen, the Tigers raced out of the gates for a 30-27 win in game one. Syracuse took a 2-1 edge with 31-29 and 30-24 victories, but Princeton forced a dramatic fifth game with a 30-25 victory in game four. The fifth game featured 11 ties and seven lead changes, and no team held more than a two-point lead. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the final two-point lead belonged to Syracuse, and the 15-13 win gave the Orangewomen a victory.
Parker Henritze, the 2005 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, led Princeton with 22 kills and 12 digs, while fellow 2006 All-Ivy selection Lindsey Ensign added 21 kills from the middle. Junior setter Bailey Robinson paced the offense with 61 assists, while senior libero Jenny McReynolds led the defense with 28 digs. As a team, Princeton dealt with erly rust and managed only a .213 attack percentage.
Princeton faced a strong Texas Tech squad in the second match, and it dropped the first two games 30-22 and 30-27. The Red Raiders seemed poised to claim the match in three games when they built a 20-11 lead, but Princeton showed the resiliency that helped it stay alive in the 2006 Ivy League race until the final weekend of the year. A strong service run by Sheena Donohue and a follow-up run by Henritze got Princeton back into the match, and a final kill by Donohue gave Princeton an exciting 30-27 win. The Red Raiders bounced back and improved to 6-2 overall with a 30-27 win in the fourth game.
Henritze again led Princeton with 18 kills while hitting .333, and she added a team-high three aces. Ensign recorded 16 kills, while Donohue had 11 kills and five digs. McReynolds led the team with 18 digs and added a pair of aces, while Robinson recorded 52 assists. Sophomore rightside player Taylor Carroll had a strong all-around match, killing nine balls with a .389 hitting percentage and adding seven assists.
Princeton showed improvement in team hitting, recording a .275 attack percentage for the match, but the Red Raiders were even more efficient with their swings and ended with a .331 attack percentage.
Princeton will conclude the Syracuse Tournament Saturday evening against Fordham.
