Dineen Hat Trick Not Enough In 5-3 Women's Hockey Loss
January 11, 2008 | Women's Ice Hockey
Junior Katherine Dineen recorded a hat trick, including a third-period
goal that evened the score at 3, but the Yale women's hockey team made
its shots count Friday night in a 5-3 ECACHL victory over Princeton at
Baker Rink. Caroline Murphy scored a shorthanded goal 3:47 into the
final period and iced the win with an empty-net tally to send the
Bulldogs to their sixth win of the season.
Princeton outshot Yale 43-26 and had three more power-play opportunities than the Bulldogs (8-5), but Yale had a 51-34 edge in faceoffs and simply made the most of its scoring opportunities. The Bulldogs converted on a pair of power plays to gain a 2-0 lead, including a rebound goal from Danielle Kozlowski after Princeton goalie Kristen Young stopped a shot by Murphy.
Dineen cut the 2-0 deficit in half when she rebounded a saved shot from Lizzie Keady and fired a low shot past Shivon Ellis. It was Dineen's second goal of the season, but it was from her last of the day.
After an unassisted goal by Helen Resor, who skated in alone and beat Young glove-side, Dineen fired a slapshot over Ellis' left shoulder for a power-play goal midway through the second period. The deficit was again one goal, and it remained that way until the early moments of the third period, when Dineen took a feed from Melanie Wallace, skated from Ellis' left to right and shot a wrister into the right side of the goal. A spirited Baker Rink crowd rejoiced at the even score, but Murphy assured that the crowd would never see a Tiger lead.
Following a tripping call against teammate Alyssa Clarke that threatened to give Princeton total momentum, Murphy stole the puck and skated in alone against Young. The Yale sophomore put it between Young's legs for her first goal of the season, and she added a second when she intercepted a pass at the Princeton end and fired a shot from the Tiger blueline into an empty net with 32 seconds remaining.
Yale, battling for the eighth spot in the ECAC playoffs, picked up its 10th point in league play, while Princeton remains with 11 points. The Tigers will look to split the home weekend before finals break Saturday at 4 p.m. against Brown.
